Police Officers Struck on Duty Have Help
A report issued by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in May 2011 highlights the fact that line of duty (LOD) traffic deaths are increasing. More than 700 police officers were killed between 2000 – 2009 either in a traffic accident or being hit while standing outside their patrol vehicles.
Unfortunately, 73 police officers were killed in traffic accidents in 2010, a 37 percent increase over the previous year. By way of comparison, that's 12 more police officers who died due to LOD traffic accidents than those who died from LOD shootings. Just recently, a New Jersey police officer was killed when a fleeing suspect hit the officer's patrol car.
Even officers on seemingly benign assignments are getting injured in LOD traffic accidents. A motorcycle police officer was hit while riding as part of a motorcade for a foreign dignitary despite the fact that other officers had stopped traffic. An irresponsible driver pulled around a bus right into the motorcade, hitting the police officer.
In the report, IACP President Mark A. Marshall stated that these numbers "are simply unacceptable," and that law enforcement leaders had to "to give our officers the best chance of survival while they protect our communities."
A need for legal advocacy for injured law enforcement
While law enforcement leadership has its role to protect police officers, any first responder injured in a traffic accident has other resources of assistance as well. Michael Kernbach has more than 25 years’ experience making sure accident victims and their families receive their just compensation.
As a former police officer, attorney Michael Kernbach understands firsthand the risks police officers take in service to their community. He also understands the stress families experience when their loved one is injured while on duty. Michael brings that full sensitivity to the needs of the officers and their families as well as his legal expertise as a former federal prosecutor and personal injury attorney to ensure the full compensation rights of all accident victims are vigorously pursued.
